Floating License Instructions

This KB article describes how to install the LMX License Server,  install the Eddy floating license and connect to the license server from client computers.

Note: The License Server runs on Window 64-bit and Linux 64-bit Operating Systems


Download the License Server software

1. When you receive your Client ID, connect to the Client Portal (https://www.vortechsfx.com/client-portal) and select Downloads

2. Download and unzip the appropriate Vortechs Vendor File.

3. Download the appropriate LM-X End User Tools installer

Please note the location of this download folder as it will be used during the installation.


Linux: License Server Installation

1. Open a terminal window and run the following commands as a root user (su to the root user or use sudo to gain root user access)

2. Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the LM-X and vendor files

# cd <path to the download folder>
# ls

You should see the unzipped lmxvendor file and the lmx installer.

3. Create the lmx user account that will be used to run the LMX license server and hold the Eddy license files

# useradd lmx


4. Run the license installer.

# ./lmx-enduser-tools-X.Y.Z-linux64.sh

where X.Y.Z is the version of LMX-Tools - currently this is 4.8.7

  • Review and accept the license
  • When prompted for the user account which will run the LMX license server - key in lmx - the account created in step 3.
  • Accept all other defaults

If you have accepted the defaults as described - your LMX License Server will have been configured to start at boot-up and will be running.


Linux: Verify the LMX license server

# /etc/init.d/lmxserv487 status

-- X-Formation LM-X License Server 4.8.7 is running.


Linux: Add the Floating License File

When you receive your license file (.lic) - please copy it to /usr/lmx-4.8.7 and restart the LMX license server

# /etc/init.d/lmxserv487 restart



Linux: Check the Floating License

# /usr/lmx-4.8.7/lmxendutil -licstat


This will return the list of features that you are licensed for.


Linux: License Issues

If you have any problems with the license server - please send an email to support@intraware.com.au and include the following files:


- /etc/init.d/lmxserv487
- /var/log/lmx_serv_installation.log
- /usr/lmx-4.8.7/lmx-serv.cfg
- /usr/lmx-4.8.7/lmx-serv.log


Floating License Client Side

Define the VORTECHS_LICENSE_PATH environment variable to point to @<host> (or use the format port@<host> if not using the default port 6200)
where <host> is the hostname of your license server


Windows: License Server Installation

1. Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the LM-X and vendor files in Windows Explorer

You should see the lmx installer .msi and the folder containing the extracted liblmxvendor.dll file

2. Launch the installer by double-clicking the .msi
  • Review and accept the license
  • Accept (or change) the Destination Folder as required
  • On the LM-X license server dialog - select the following options as shown
           - Check the "Install the LM-X license server" option
           - Browse to the path containing your liblmxvendor.dll file
           - Check the "Install the LM-X license server as a service"
           - Check the "Start the LM-X License Service after installation"



  • Accept all other defaults and complete the installation.



Windows: Add the Floating License File

When you receive your license file (.lic) - please copy it to
    C:\Program Files\X-Formation\LM-X End-user Tools 4.8.7 x64
or wherever you have installed the LMX Server software.

Stop and Start the LMX License Server using the options provided under
    Start > Programs > X-Formation > LM-X End-user Tools 4.8.7 x64

    > Stop LM-X License Server
    and
    > Start LM-X License Server


Windows: Check the Floating License
Select Start > Programs > X-Formation > LM-X End-user Tools 4.8.7 x64 > Launch Command Prompt

In the Terminal window which appears - key in the command
    lmxendutil -licstat

This will check for license files and return the list of features that you are licensed for.


Windows: License Issues

If you have any problems with the license server - please send an email to support@intraware.com.au and include the following files:

- C:\Program Files\X-Formation\LM-X End-user Tools 4.8.7 x64\lmx-srv.log
- C:\Program Files\X-Formation\LM-X End-user Tools 4.8.7 x64\lmx-srv.cfg

Please substitute the path with wherever you have installed the LMX Server software.


Floating License Client Side
